Magnus Hirschfeld

Magnus Hirschfeld was a pioneering German physician and sexologist, renowned for his advocacy of LGBTQ rights and sexual reform in the early 20th century. Educated in philosophy, philology, and medicine, he founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in 1897, which is recognized as the first organization to advocate for the rights of homosexuals and transgender individuals. His work in Berlin-Charlottenburg during the 1920s established him as a leading figure in the field of sexology, where he sought to promote understanding and acceptance of sexual diversity through scientific research and public discourse. Hirschfeld's contributions to sexual rights were met with fierce opposition, particularly from the rising fascist movements in Germany. He faced violence from völkisch activists and saw his Institut für Sexualwissenschaft looted and its extensive library burned by the Nazis in 1933. Forced into exile in France, Hirschfeld continued to advocate for sexual minorities until his death in 1935. His legacy endures as a foundational figure in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and his work laid the groundwork for future advancements in sexual health and rights advocacy.
