Charles Kenneth Horne was an influential English comedian and businessman, best known for his work on several popular BBC Radio series. Born to a clergyman and politician, Horne initially pursued a career in business with Triplex Safety Glass. However, his path shifted during World War II when he served in the Royal Air Force. It was during this time that he began his broadcasting career as a quizmaster on the BBC radio show Ack-Ack, Beer-Beer, which led to his collaboration with established entertainer Richard Murdoch on the comedy series Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh from 1944 to 1954. After the war, Horne returned to the business world, eventually becoming the chairman and managing director of toy manufacturers Chad Valley. However, a stroke in 1958 prompted him to focus solely on his entertainment career. He became a central figure in the radio series Beyond Our Ken, which aired from 1958 to 1964, featuring a talented ensemble cast that included Kenneth Williams and Betty Marsden. Following the conclusion of Beyond Our Ken, Horne and his castmates transitioned to Round the Horne, which ran from 1965 to 1968. Horne's contributions to British radio comedy left a lasting impact, showcasing his unique blend of humor and character-driven storytelling, and cementing his legacy as a key figure in the genre.
