John W. Moon was a prominent politician and businessman in Michigan during the late 19th century. Born in Wayne County, he spent his early years working on a farm before moving to Jackson County, where he gained experience in the lumber industry. By 1856, Moon had settled in Muskegon County, where he became a key figure in the local economy through his involvement in lumber manufacturing and banking. His partnership in A.V. Mann & Co. led to the establishment of a significant mill in the area, contributing to Muskegon's growth as a lumber town. Moon's political career was marked by various local offices, including supervisor and township treasurer, before he served in the Michigan Senate in the mid-1880s. His leadership extended to the financial sector as well, where he was elected president of the Muskegon Savings Bank in 1887. Additionally, he played a role in education as a member of the Muskegon board of education. Moon's contributions to both the economic and political landscape of Muskegon solidified his legacy as a significant figure in Michigan's development during this period.
