Jaakko Forsman was a prominent Finnish jurist and politician, recognized as a key figure in the Fennoman movement, which sought to promote the Finnish language and culture. He made history in 1857 by submitting the first Finnish language dissertation to the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki, where he later became a professor of law and legal history in 1879. Forsman's academic career culminated in his role as acting rector of the university from 1896 until his death in 1899. Forsman's most significant contributions include his work on the 1889 Finnish Criminal Code, which established foundational principles of criminal law in Finland. His lectures on criminal law became the definitive interpretation of the code, earning him the title of 'Father of Finnish Criminal Law.' Additionally, his seminal text, "Suomen lainsäädännön historia" (The History of Finnish Legislation), published in 1896, further solidified his legacy as a leading scholar in Finnish legal history. Forsman's influence extended beyond academia, as he served in the Diet of Finland from 1882 until his passing, advocating for legal reforms and the advancement of Finnish national identity.
