Henri Joutel was a French explorer and soldier, best known for his detailed eyewitness account of the ill-fated expedition led by René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. Born in Rouen, Joutel initially served as a soldier before joining La Salle's venture to establish a French colony in North America. He became the commander of Fort Saint-Louis in Texas, which served as the base for La Salle's operations. The expedition faced numerous challenges, including navigational errors that led them far from the intended mouth of the Mississippi River, the loss of their ships, and ultimately, La Salle's murder by his own men. Following these events, Joutel took charge of leading the remaining members of the expedition back to France, traversing the difficult terrain of the Illinois Country and the waterways of New France. Joutel's journal from this expedition is a significant historical document, providing some of the earliest written accounts of the natural history and indigenous cultures of central North America. His observations contribute valuable insights into the region's geography and ethnography during the late 17th century. After returning to France, Joutel served as a guard at the gates of Rouen and declined further opportunities to return to the New World. His journal would later play a role in the Iberville expedition, which successfully established a lasting French presence near the Mississippi River in 1699, underscoring Joutel's lasting impact on the exploration and understanding of North America.
