Hans Kurella was a prominent German painter of the Renaissance, renowned primarily for his portraiture. Born in the late 15th century, he began his artistic career as the court painter for George the Pious, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. Kurella later served as a court portraitist for King Louis II of Hungary in Prague and Buda between 1522 and 1526. His reputation as the 'Fürstenmaler' or 'Painter of Princes' grew as he painted notable figures, including Albrecht of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Elector Augustus of Saxony. His works adorned significant locations, such as the ceremonial hall and council chamber of the Old Town Hall in Leipzig, where he was active from 1531 onwards. One of Kurella's most significant contributions to art is the painting 'Battle of Orsha,' which depicts the 1514 battle between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. This work, long attributed to Lucas Cranach the Elder, showcases Kurella's deep understanding of the subject, suggesting he may have participated in the battle himself. His connections with influential patrons, including members of the Jagiellonian dynasty, further solidified his status in the art world. Kurella's legacy as a skilled portraitist and his contributions to historical painting underscore his importance in the Renaissance art movement, marking him as a notable figure in the history of German painting.
