George Frideric Handel was a prominent German-British Baroque composer renowned for his operas, oratorios, and instrumental works. Born in Halle, he spent his formative years in Hamburg and Italy, where he absorbed the rich traditions of the Italian Baroque and the middle-German polyphonic choral style. In 1712, Handel settled in London, where he became a naturalized British subject in 1727. His innovative contributions to music included the development of the English oratorio and the organ concerto, elevating the standards of church music in England. His operas, particularly those written for the English nobility, showcased his mastery of the Italian opera form, while his later works reflected a shift towards appealing to the middle class. Handel's legacy is marked by his ability to blend different musical traditions and his prolific output, which includes masterpieces such as the oratorio Messiah, the orchestral suites Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks. His coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest, has been a staple at British coronations since 1727. Following a significant health crisis in 1737, Handel pivoted to focus on English choral music, a decision that solidified his place in the hearts of the public. By the time of his death in 1759, he was celebrated as one of the greatest composers of his era, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to influence musicians and composers today.
