Francisco Rodrigues Lobo was a prominent Portuguese poet and bucolic writer, often referred to as the Portuguese Theocritus for his pastoral themes. Born in Leiria to affluent New Christian parents, he immersed himself in philosophy and poetry, eventually studying at the University of Coimbra, where he earned a licentiate degree around 1600. Lobo served as a teacher to the sons of the Duke of Vila Real and frequently visited Lisbon, contributing to the cultural landscape of his time. His literary contributions were significant, particularly during an era when Castilian was favored by the literati due to the Philippine Dynasty. Lobo's works, including his early volume of verse, Romanceiro, published in 1596, and his later eclogues and prose pastorals, were primarily written in Portuguese, marking a notable effort to promote the language. His major works, such as Primavera (1601), Pastor Peregrino (1608), and Desenganado (1614), showcased his mastery of pastoral poetry and solidified his legacy as a key figure in Portuguese literature, influencing subsequent generations of writers and poets with his dedication to the vernacular.
