Edward Winslow was a prominent Separatist and political leader in early New England, best known for his role as a key figure in the establishment of Plymouth Colony. Traveling aboard the Mayflower in 1620, he was one of the signatories of the Mayflower Compact, which laid the groundwork for self-governance in the New World. Winslow served in various governmental roles, including assistant governor and three terms as governor, and was a trusted advisor to Governor William Bradford, particularly after the death of John Carver in 1621. His leadership was instrumental in navigating the challenges faced by the early settlers. In addition to his political contributions, Winslow was a prolific writer. He authored several significant pamphlets, including "Good Newes from New England," and co-wrote "Mourt's Relation" with Bradford, which provides a detailed account of the Pilgrims' experiences, including the first Thanksgiving. Winslow's writings not only documented the early colonial life but also helped shape the narrative of the Pilgrims' journey and settlement. He died in 1655 while on a naval expedition in the Caribbean, leaving behind a legacy as the only original Plymouth colonist with a surviving portrait from life, a testament to his importance in American history.
“Thus, by degrees, we began to discover Tisquantum; whose ends were only to make himself great in the eyes of his countrymen, by means of his nearness and favour with us: not caring who fell, so he stood.”
“The country, in respect of the lying of it, is both champaign and hilly, like many places in England.”
“Some of our people that are dead took the original of their death here.”
