Daniel Corrie

Daniel Corrie was an influential English Anglican priest and the first Bishop of Madras, playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the Anglican Church in India. Born in Ardchattan, Argyll, he was the second son of a vicar and pursued his education at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. After his ordination as a deacon in 1802 and a priest in 1804, Corrie dedicated himself to missionary work in India, where he became Archdeacon of Calcutta in 1823. His leadership and commitment to the church's mission in India were instrumental in shaping the Anglican community there. In 1835, Corrie was consecrated as the Bishop of Madras, marking a significant milestone in his ecclesiastical career. His tenure was characterized by efforts to expand the church's influence and address the spiritual needs of the growing Christian population in the region. Despite his relatively short time in this role, his contributions laid the groundwork for future church leaders and established a legacy of dedication to both faith and community service. Corrie's unexpected death in 1837 was noted in The Times, highlighting his impact on the church and society during a transformative period in Indian history.

“I got a number of very thoughtful responses to the email I sent out last night, most of which I don’t have time to respond to right now. Thanks everyone for the encouragement, questions, criticism. Daniel’s response was particularly inspiring to me and deserves to be shared. The resistance of Israeli Jewish people to the occupation and the enormous risk taken by those refusing to serve in the Israeli military offers an example, especially for those of us living in the United States, of how to behave when you discover that atrocities are being commited in your name. Thank you.””
