Daniel Alexander Payne was a prominent American bishop, educator, and author who played a crucial role in shaping the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). As its sixth bishop, he served for over four decades, emphasizing the importance of education and the preparation of ministers. In 1856, he co-founded Wilberforce University in Ohio, which became a significant institution for African American education. His leadership extended to becoming the first African American president of a college in the United States when he took the helm at Wilberforce in 1863, a position he held until 1877. Payne's efforts in organizing missionary support for freedmen in the South after the Civil War led to a remarkable increase in AME Church membership, adding 250,000 new members during the Reconstruction era. In addition to his administrative and missionary work, Payne contributed to the historical narrative of the AME Church by authoring its first history in 1891, alongside his memoir. His writings and leadership not only solidified the church's presence in the South but also established a legacy of educational advancement and religious leadership within the African American community. Payne's influence extended beyond his lifetime, as he laid the groundwork for future generations of African American leaders and educators, making him a pivotal figure in both religious and educational history in the United States.
