Charles H. Curtis was a prominent political figure and the first Native American to serve in the United States Congress. Born in the Kansas Territory and a member of the Kaw Nation, he began his political career in 1892 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the years, he became a significant force in American politics, serving as Senate Majority Leader from 1924 to 1929 and ultimately as the 31st Vice President of the United States under Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933. Curtis was a proponent of assimilation for Native Americans, believing that mainstream education could benefit Indigenous communities. His legislative efforts included the Curtis Act of 1898, which aimed to extend the Dawes Act to the Five Civilized Tribes, a move that significantly impacted tribal land titles and the path toward Oklahoma's statehood in 1907. Throughout his political career, Curtis was known for his ability to navigate complex legislative landscapes. He introduced the first version of the Equal Rights Amendment in 1921, a landmark proposal that would not be ratified until 1972. His leadership roles in the Senate, including his tenure as Republican Whip and Majority Leader, allowed him to influence key legislation and shape national policy. Curtis's legacy is marked not only by his groundbreaking role as a Native American leader in U.S. politics but also by his contributions to the legislative framework that sought to integrate Native Americans into American society.
