Wessex Tales

Thomas Hardy

1888

British Literature, Short Stories

Thomas Hardy built an entire world from the imagination of Wessex, and these six tales reveal that world at its most unforgiving. Written in 1888, between his great novels, they distill his bleakest impulses into stories that cut like winter wind across the Dorset hills. Here marriage becomes a cage, desire a form of madness, and fate an indifferent force that grinds human hopes to dust. The collection opens with An Imaginative Woman, where a restless wife at a seaside resort falls dangerously under the spell of a local poet, her longing for something more exposing the suffocating narrowness of her practical husband's world. Other tales venture into darker territory still, including two consecutive stories about executioners that Hardy himself acknowledged as the collection's dark heart. This is Hardy without the safety net of pagination, his unflinching gaze compressed into devastating short form. For those who find his novels overwhelming, Wessex Tales offers the same iron heart in smaller, sharper doses.
