All his life, Charles Dickens walked. But it was the sleepless nights of his later years that produced something stranger and more haunting than any of his novels: a man wandering the empty streets of London at three in the morning, watching the city breathe in ways its waking inhabitants never see. The Uncommercial Traveller is the result - a collection of vivid, meandering sketches that capture a Victorian London few will recognize: the shuttered shops and night watchmen, the last lingering drinkers, the theatres emptying their audiences into the rain. Dickens walks not as a tourist but as a flâneur, a gentleman stroller who finds poetry in pavement and revelation in gutters.
