Theocritus, Bion and Moschus, Rendered into English Prose

The pastoral tradition begins here. Theocritus, working in third-century BCE Syracuse, invented an entire way of seeing the world when he put verses into the mouths of shepherds. These are not simple poems about simple people: they are sophisticated literary games, playful dialogues and song contests where goatherds and goatherds debate love, loss, and the power of art itself. This collection gathers his pioneering idylls alongside the work of his followers Bion and Moschus, rendering the sunlit hills of Sicily and the Greek islands into English prose. Here you'll find the legendary Song of Daphnis, the languid beauty of Lycidas mourning, and the famous fragment about Eros recreated in fire. These poems seem effortless, but that effortlessness is the highest art. They gave Western literature its shepherds, its Arcadias, its mode of writing about country life that would stretch from Virgil through Spenser to every pastoral fancy that followed.
