Classics of Literature, Novels

Translated by Michael Henry Dziewicki

The fourth volume of Reymont's masterpiece opens with death: old Boryna lies dead in his fields, discovered by his dog, and the whole village mobilizes to mourn him. But grief mingles with calculation as Hanka, his daughter-in-law, calculates what the death means for land and power. This is Reymont's genius - the sacred and the transactional, the communal and the predatory, constantly intertwined. Summer arrives like a fever. The feast of Saints Peter and Paul transforms Lipka into a theater of desire and display. The seminarian returns and sets hearts ablaze. Young people court and clash beneath the summer sky while the Squire circles, negotiating forest rights, and the priest scolds his flock for sins they'll commit again by Sunday. This is a world where desire and dread coexist, where land means survival, where a daughter's shame (her father begging among the dziads) coexists with the communal feast. Reymont renders peasant life with the epic sweep of an opera and the psychological precision of a naturalist - you will recognize these people, their ambitions and cruelties, their stubborn dignity and blind spots. Summer burns hot in Lipka, and so do the hearts within it.
