The Æneid of Virgil Translated into English Prose

The Æneid of Virgil Translated into English Prose

Virgil

1910

Translated by John Conington

The Aeneid is the story Rome told itself about who it was and why it mattered. Aeneas, survivor of Troy's ashes, carries his gods and his grief westward through storms, shipwreck, and the wrath of gods determined to break him. He finds love in Carthage with Queen Dido, only to abandon her for a destiny he cannot refuse. He descends into the underworld to meet his father's shade. He wages war in Italy, carving from blood and sacrifice the foundation of a civilization that would dominate the world. This is not a simple triumph narrative: Virgil's genius lies in showing the cost, the grief, the impossible choices that build empires. The prose translation preserves the sweep and weight of the original, making accessible one of the foundational works of Western literature, a poem about what we owe to the dead, the living, and the unborn.
