The Monastery

The Monastery casts its shadow across the Scottish Borders in 1550, when the old faith trembles and a new order rises. At Kennaquhair, a stand-in for Melrose Abbey, whose ruins still stand near Walter Scott's own home, the Benedictine house faces dissolution as Protestant winds sweep through Scotland. Two brothers find themselves divided by the coming storm: one clings to the Catholic world that's shaped him, the other embraces the Reformed faith reshaping the nation. Yet the monastery walls hold secrets darker than theology. A ghost stalks the cloisters. A mysterious monk arrives on a strange errand, to recover a heart buried beneath the abbey floors. Captain Clutterbuck, our frame-narrator, introduces us to this liminal world where the supernatural bleeds through the historical, where humor tempers the doom gathering like fog over the Tweed. Scott weaves a tale of faith, faction, and the personal costs of living through an era that dismantled one world to build another.
