Rob Roy
Rob Roy is a novel about the collision of worlds. Frank Osbaldistone, a young English merchant's son with no head for business and a poet's temperament, is sent north to collect a stolen debt. What he finds is a Scotland teetering between the old ways and the new, and at its heart stands Rob Roy MacGregor: cattle drover, outlaw, Jacobite, a man who steals from the rich to feed the poor and answers to no crown. Scott builds their unlikely friendship with tremendous skill, two men from opposite worlds who recognize something true in each other. The novel moves through kidnap, betrayal, battle, and romance with the velocity of a great adventure, but its real power lies in what it explores: loyalty, identity, and the impossible choice between law and justice when the law serves only the powerful. This is historical fiction that breathes.
