The Lady of the Aroostook
1879
In 1879, William Dean Howells told the story of a nineteen-year-old orphan who sails alone across the Atlantic to chase a dream of becoming a singer. That was radical. Lydia Blood leaves the gray farmlands of Northern Massachusetts and her elderly relatives for the luminous canals of Venice, where another aunt waits to cultivate her remarkable voice. Howells understood something essential about departure: the terror and exhilaration of leaving everyone and everything you know. The novel opens in that South Bradfield farmhouse, saturated with the bittersweet atmosphere of goodbye - pride and sadness tangled together, her grandfather and aunt watching their young kin vanish toward a life they cannot imagine. Then comes the ship, the Aroostook, a floating world where Lydia must navigate unfamiliar social currents and discover who she becomes when unmoored from home. This is a quiet revolution: a story about a woman claiming her own future at a time when such journeys were extraordinary. It endures because the ache of leaving - the terrible privilege of growing up - never changes.
