The Antiquary — Volume 02

Walter Scott invented the historical novel, and The Antiquary remains proof of his genius. This second volume continues the adventures of Jonathan Oldbuck, an irascible yet lovable antiquarian whose passion for Scotland's past throws him into the middle of treasure hunting, family drama, and romantic intrigue. When the search for buried wealth leads to the ruins of St. Ruth and a dramatic excavation that could reshape fortunes, Oldbuck must contend with scheming strangers, a wayward nephew, and the weight of secrets buried for centuries. Scott weaves comedy and catastrophe with masterly ease: Oldbuck's pedantry becomes both absurd and endearing, while the young Lovel's path to winning his beloved grows increasingly perilous. The past does not merely interest these characters, it actively disrupts their lives, rising from the ground to transform who they are and what they might become. For lovers of 19th-century literature who want history that breathes, characters who linger in the mind, and a story that moves with genuine momentum.
