Tales of the Five Towns

Tales of the Five Towns captures the intimate dramas of Bursley, a fictional industrial town in England's Potteries, at the dawn of the twentieth century. Arnold Bennett writes with deceptive simplicity about the small but fierce battles of provincial life: a Deputy-Mayor impulsively buying a flock of geese to impress a rival, young lovers maneuvering through chaperones and class expectations, neighbors calculating social standing with the intensity of diplomats. His prose moves between comedy and quiet pathos, observing how people try to transcend or maintain their place in a world where everyone knows everyone else's business. The title story introduces Josiah Curtenty, whose whimsical encounter with a gloomy gooseherd sets off a chain of misadventures that reveal both the absurdity and the heart beneath small-town decorum. Bennett treats his characters' ambitions and delusions with benevolent irony, capturing the way provincial lives can feel as dramatic and consequential to those living them as any epic.
