Something About Eve: A Comedy of Fig-Leaves

A devilishly clever satire that peels back the pretensions of heroic fantasy, Cabell's novel follows Gerald Musgrave, a would-be magician whose greatest trick is avoiding adulthood. When a spectral figure called the Sylan offers to inhabit Gerald's body and handle his tangled romantic affairs, Gerald jumps at the chance to become a ghost while pretending to be alive. The arrangement suits them both: Gerald escapes the complications of his married lover and the demands of genuine effort, while the Sylan gets to experience mortal existence without responsibility. But the joke cuts deeper than either anticipated. Cabell dismantles the hero's journey with surgical precision, revealing the cowardice and self-deception beneath the quest for glory in the fabled land of Antan. The rose-colored spectacles aren't metaphorical here; they're literal, and they blind Gerald to every truth that might set him free. For all its whimsy and wit, Something About Eve is a merciless anatomy of the man who chooses comfortable illusion over the terrifying possibility of becoming something real.
