Mountain-Laurel and Maidenhair

This lesser-known Alcott novel pairs two girls from opposite worlds in a pastoral meditation on friendship, class, and what it means to belong. Emily, a fragile city girl sent to the mountains to recover from illness, arrives at Rebecca's farmhouse hollow and homesick. Rebecca is the anchor: hardworking, proud of her mountain home, her poetry hidden and unspoken. What unfolds is a quiet revolution of the spirit. Emily teaches Rebecca that her words matter; Rebecca teaches Emily that strength can be gentle, that dirt under fingernails and hard work are nothing to ashamed of. They share dreams across the divide of class and circumstance, and both emerge transformed. Alcott writes female friendship with the same sure hand she brought to March family dramas, but this is softer, more contemplative, a novel that understands healing happens slowly, in small moments, under the shade of mountain-laurel and maidenhair.
