Misericordia

Misericordia captures a particular cruelty hidden in plain sight: the economics of charity, dependence, and the dignity that survives even in ruin. At its heart is Benita, a servant who has fallen so far alongside her mistress Donna Francisca that she now begs in the streets of Madrid to keep them both alive. When an unexpected inheritance transforms their fortunes, the reward for years of devotion is abandonment. Galdós renders 19th-century Madrid with unsentimental precision, moving between the church steps where beggars compete for coins and the decaying parlors where pride survives longer than food. The novel asks uncomfortable questions about what mercy actually costs, who deserves it, and whether the line between giver and receiver is ever as clear as the wealthy believe. This is social realism at its most humane: neither polemic nor pity, but a clear-eyed portrait of people trying to survive systems that barely acknowledge their existence.
