A clerk named William Falder alters a cheque to help the woman he love escape her brutal husband. He gets caught. And then the real punishment begins. Written in 1910, Galsworthy's play is a relentless expose of a justice system that destroys rather than rehabilitates. Falder isn't a hardened criminal, he's a desperate man who made one terrible choice. Yet the machinery of law grinds forward with cold precision: trial, conviction, imprisonment. The play follows him into the penal system's darkness and asks an unbearable question: what justice exists for those society has already decided are worthless? Galsworthy was so daring he made audiences confront the class cruelty buried in legal procedure, while never losing sight of the human being being destroyed. The play ignited public debate and helped reform Britain's brutal prison conditions. It remains essential for anyone who believes theatre should make us uncomfortable about how we treat the fallen.
