Comedias, Tomo 3 De 3: Las Fiestas De Ceres, Las Ranas, Las Junteras, Pluto

This final volume gathers four of Aristophanes' most audacious comedies, each one a volcanic eruption of political satire and theatrical self-mockery. The Frogs stages a deadpan showdown in the underworld between tragedians Aeschylus and Euripides, with Dionysus as the bewildered judge of a poetry contest that somehow determines the fate of Athens. The Thesmophoriazusae sees Euripides' father-in-law infiltrating a women's festival disguised in drag, a farce that disguises a sharp critique of how men represent women on stage. The Ecclesiazusae imagines women seizing political power through legislative trickery, while Pluto reimagines wealth as a literal god who can be blinded and healed. Together, these plays constitute one of the oldest and most vital traditions of political comedy in Western civilization, written in an era when free speech in the theater was genuinely dangerous. They remain staggeringly funny, structurally ingenious, and uncomfortably relevant.
