Anglo-Saxon Literature

Here is the oldest English. Before Shakespeare, before Chaucer, before the Norman Conquest remade the language in French image, there was Anglo-Saxon: a literature forged in monasteries and mead-halls, in a tongue that sounds like no English you have ever heard. John Earle's 1884 masterpiece remains the essential introduction to this forgotten tradition. He traces the remarkable story of how Christian monks took up the rough, alliterative poetry of pagan warriors and created something unprecedented: the first vernacular literature of modern Europe. You will find Beowulf here, of course, but also riddles that twist like brain-teasers, elegies that ache with loss, and a heroic code that feels both ancient and startlingly modern. This is where English literature begins, and Earle is the guide who first made it legible to modern readers. For anyone curious about the deep roots of the language, this book is an act of archaeological discovery.
