A Chariot of Fire

A Chariot of Fire, written by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps in the early 20th century, tells the story of Jacob Dryver, a poor quarry-farmer whose son, Batty, is gravely injured. Set on a foggy night, the narrative explores themes of social class and compassion as Dryver seeks help from the affluent Hurlburt Chester. Their journey to save Batty reveals the complexities of their differing social statuses and culminates in a twist that forever alters both families. The work is notable for its poignant examination of humanity in desperate circumstances.
