Κύκλωψ

The only surviving satyr play by Euripides, this ancient oddity stages one of the Odyssey's most brutal encounters through a wildly unexpected lens. Odysseus and his crew stumble into the cave of Polyphemus, the man-eating Cyclops, only to discover the one-eyed giant has already devoured several sailors. But here's the twist: serving this murderous landlord are Silenus and a chorus of satyrs, those lecherous, drunken creatures of Dionysus, who complain about their bondage while the horror unfolds. What follows is a tense game of wits, as Odysseus hatches the now-legendary plan to get the Cyclops drunk, blind him with a sharpened stake, and escape. The satyrs, caught between fear of the Cyclops and desperate hope for freedom, add a darkly comic layer to what might otherwise be straightforward survival drama. It's a strange, genre-defying work that makes you laugh at the very moment you remember men are being eaten.
