William George Eveleigh was an English organist and composer, renowned for his significant contributions to church music and his tenure at Saint Finbarre's Cathedral in Cork, Ireland. Born in Meerut, India, he was the son of a Royal Horse Artillery captain and received his education at Cranleigh and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He later earned a doctorate in music from Queen's College, Oxford, in 1895. In 1894, he married Louise Goldhurst, with whom he had four children. Eveleigh's musical journey included appointments in various locations, such as Bramley, Holywell, and Ayr, before he became the choirmaster and organist at St. Fin Barre's Cathedral in 1903, a position he held until 1922. During his time in Cork, he succeeded John Christopher Marks and was instrumental in shaping the cathedral's musical landscape. Eveleigh's compositions extended beyond church music; he created a five-act opera titled The Valkyrie, showcasing his versatility as a composer. His influence on the musical community in Cork was profound, with his pupil Jonathan Thomas Horne succeeding him and continuing his legacy until 1977. After retiring to England in 1922, Eveleigh continued to be remembered for his contributions to music until his passing in 1950. His work not only enriched the liturgical music of his time but also left a lasting impact on the tradition of church music in Ireland.
