Truman C. Everts was an American government official and explorer known for his significant contributions to the exploration of the American West. He served as the first federal tax assessor for the Montana Territory, but his most notable achievement came during the 1870 Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition. This expedition aimed to explore the region that would later be designated as Yellowstone National Park. Everts's journey took a harrowing turn when he became lost in the wilderness for 37 days, a survival ordeal that he later chronicled in an article for Scribner’s Monthly, detailing his experiences and the challenges he faced in the untamed landscape. Everts's narrative not only provided a personal account of survival but also contributed to the growing interest in the natural wonders of Yellowstone. His experiences and writings helped to illuminate the rugged beauty and potential of the region, influencing public perception and interest in national parks. In recognition of his contributions, Mount Everts in Yellowstone National Park was named in his honor, cementing his legacy as a key figure in the early exploration of one of America's most treasured landscapes.
