Ronald Arbuthnott Knox was an influential English Catholic priest, theologian, and author known for his scholarly contributions and engaging literary works. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, he initially pursued a career within the Church of England, being ordained in 1912. However, his conversion to Catholicism in 1917 led him to become a Catholic priest the following year. Knox served as the Catholic chaplain at the University of Oxford from 1926 to 1939, during which he made significant contributions to religious literature, including his notable translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible, known as the 'Knox Bible', which was widely used in Catholic services throughout the mid-20th century. In addition to his theological work, Knox was a prolific writer of detective fiction, creating a unique niche within the genre. He is particularly remembered for his 'Ten Commandments' for detective stories, which established a framework for fair play in mystery writing, allowing readers to engage actively in solving the puzzle alongside the detective. His blend of literary prowess and theological insight has left a lasting impact on both religious and literary communities, marking him as a significant figure in 20th-century English literature.
“Dogmas may fly out at the window but congregations do not come in at the door.””
“But in disclaiming the dead, you are yourself disclaimed by the dead. If you are not prepared to blush for Alexander the Sixth, it is childishly inconsistent to take pride in the memory of Saint Francis.””
“Oh Lord Dumbello, what of the sacred character of truth? What of that difficulty about religious education, and that promise of thine, so lightly made, condemning the little Dumbellos (if need be) to the creed of the Prophet, and drink no more of the port that lies in the Hartletop cellars? Oh, Lord Dumbello, is not a man's best friend his mother, and shoulders not thou have been open with her at a time like this?””
