Robert Koldewey

Robert Koldewey was a prominent German archaeologist renowned for his extensive excavations of the ancient city of Babylon, located in present-day Iraq. Born in Blankenburg am Harz, he dedicated much of his career to uncovering the rich history of Mesopotamia. His most significant contributions include the discovery of the foundations of the ziggurat of Marduk and the iconic Ishtar Gate, which showcased the grandeur of Babylonian architecture. Koldewey's work on the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, conducted between 1899 and 1917, utilized innovative techniques he developed for identifying and excavating mud brick structures, a method that has since become fundamental in archaeological practice.
