Joseph Cundall

Joseph Cundall was a notable Victorian writer, photographer, and publisher who significantly contributed to children's literature and the photographic arts. Under the pseudonym 'Stephen Percy,' he began his career in London after training as a printer in Ipswich. Cundall initially worked with Charles Tilt, publishing two books before taking over the Juvenile Library in 1841. He was instrumental in the creation of the Home Treasury children's book series, which was edited by Henry Cole, a key figure in the development of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Cundall's innovative approach included transforming traditional narratives, such as changing the antagonist in 'The Story of the Three Bears' from an old woman to a young girl, showcasing his forward-thinking perspective on children's storytelling. In addition to his literary contributions, Cundall was a pioneer in photography. He founded The Photographic Institution and was a founding member of the Royal Photographic Society of London. His work included documenting the construction of the SS Great Eastern and capturing portraits of notable figures from the Crimean War. Despite facing bankruptcy in 1849, Cundall's ventures in publishing and photography left a lasting impact on both fields, providing employment for many artists and influencing the visual representation of literature during his time. His legacy endures through his contributions to children's literature and the early development of photography in England.
