Jacob Piatt Dunn was an influential American historian, journalist, and political reformer whose work significantly shaped the understanding of Indiana's history. Born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and raised in Indianapolis, he graduated from Earlham College and earned a law degree from the University of Michigan. Although he initially practiced law, Dunn's passion for journalism and history flourished after he moved to Colorado, where he began to explore the region's past. He returned to Indianapolis in 1884, publishing his first book, 'Massacres of the Mountains: A History of the Indian Wars of the Far West, 1815–1875,' in 1886. His most notable work, 'Greater Indianapolis: The History, the Industries, the Institutions, and the People of a City of Homes' (1910), remains a seminal text on the city's development and character. Dunn's contributions extended beyond writing; he was a key figure in the revitalization of the Indiana Historical Society and served as its recording secretary for nearly four decades. His dedication to preserving the history and culture of Indiana included a focus on the Miami tribe, for whom he compiled a Miami–English dictionary, a resource still valuable to researchers today. Through his political writing and advocacy for ballot reform, Dunn also influenced local governance, serving as an adviser to prominent Indiana politicians. His legacy endures in the fields of history and ethnology, where his works continue to be respected for their depth and insight into Indiana's past.
