Francisco Goya y Lucientes was a pivotal Spanish painter and printmaker, recognized as one of the most significant artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Fuendetodos, Aragon, Goya began his artistic journey at the age of 14, studying under José Luzán y Martinez before moving to Madrid to further his education with Anton Raphael Mengs. His early career flourished as he became a court painter for the Spanish Crown in 1786, where he created portraits of the aristocracy and designed Rococo-style tapestry cartoons for the royal palace. Notable works from this period include 'La maja desnuda' and 'Charles IV of Spain and His Family', both of which showcase his mastery of portraiture and his ability to capture the complexities of his subjects. However, Goya's life took a dramatic turn following a severe illness in 1793 that left him deaf, marking the beginning of a profound transformation in his artistic style. His later works, characterized by a darker and more pessimistic tone, reflected his disillusionment with society and the political turmoil of his time. Paintings such as 'The Third of May 1808' and the series of prints known as 'Los Caprichos' reveal his critical perspective on war, human folly, and the darker aspects of human nature. Often regarded as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns, Goya's influence extended well into the 19th and 20th centuries, shaping the direction of modern art and leaving a lasting legacy that continues to resonate today.
