Ernst Cohn-Wiener was a pioneering German historian of Islamic art, whose work significantly advanced the understanding of Central Asian architecture. Born in Tilsit, he pursued studies in art history, archaeology, and philosophy at prestigious institutions in Berlin and Heidelberg, culminating in a PhD in 1907. His scholarly journey took a transformative turn in the 1920s when he focused on Islamic art history, leading him to undertake expeditions in 1924 and 1925 to explore the largely uncharted monuments of Central Asia. This research culminated in his influential publication, 'Turan: Islamische Baukunst in Mittelasien', which showcased the rich architectural heritage of the region and established him as a key figure in the field. Cohn-Wiener's career was tragically interrupted by the rise of the Nazi regime, which forced him to flee Germany due to anti-Semitic policies. He first emigrated to India, where he worked for the Maharaja of Baroda, before ultimately relocating to the United States in 1939. Despite his untimely death in 1941, Cohn-Wiener's legacy endures through his extensive photographic archive, which was later acquired by the British Museum. His contributions to Islamic art history remain significant, particularly in the context of Central Asian studies, and his work continues to inspire scholars in the field today.
