Crawford Howell Toy

Crawford Howell Toy was a prominent American Hebrew scholar whose academic contributions significantly advanced the study of biblical literature and languages. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he graduated from the University of Virginia in 1856 before furthering his education at the University of Berlin from 1866 to 1868. Toy's career began as a professor of Hebrew at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he taught from 1869 to 1879, first in Greenville, South Carolina, and later in Louisville, Kentucky. His expertise and dedication to the field led him to Harvard University in 1880, where he held the position of Hancock Professor of Hebrew and Oriental languages until 1903, also serving as a Dexter lecturer on biblical literature during his tenure.
