Yeast: A Problem

First published in 1851, Charles Kingsley's debut novel arrive with the urgency of a man who could not stay silent. Through the wandering meditations of Lancelot Smith, a young man adrift in a world of genteel poverty and rural suffering, Kingsley turns his gaze toward the English countryside and finds a wound that polite society has chosen not to see. The agricultural laborers, those who till the soil that feeds the nation, live in conditions that would horrify any conscience not deliberately numbed. Kingsley, already a voice in the emerging chorus of social reform, uses his fiction as a weapon: excoriating the new Poor Law, challenging the moral complacency of the gentry, and demanding that educated England reckon with what it has permitted. The novel is uneven, its philosophical digressions occasionally overwhelming its slim narrative, but its passion is unmistakable.
