Vanden Vos Reinaerde: Uitgegeven En Toegelicht

The most notorious fox in European literature springs to life in this landmark critical edition of the Middle Dutch masterpiece. Reynard the Fox is neither hero nor villain but something far more interesting: a brilliant manipulator who exposes the greed, foolishness, and corruption of every authority figure he encounters. Whether conning a dim-witted bear out of his honey, humiliating the lion king Noble through sheer rhetorical cunning, or surviving the wolf Isengrim's murderous grudge, Reynard operates by one principle: the clever always devour the powerful. This edition presents the original text in its old spelling, accompanied by Jonckbloet's extensive scholarly apparatus examining the poem's origins, authorship debates, and its singular place in Dutch literary history. What emerges is both a vital cultural artifact and a surprisingly darkly funny portrait of a world where survival demands wit and virtue is merely another weapon others wield against you. The Reynard stories predated Machiavelli by centuries yet arrived at the same brutal conclusion: in a court of beasts, the cleverest beast wins.
