Unravelled Knots

In a London teashop, a woman journalist encounters a peculiar old man who has spent decades perfecting the art of armchair detection. He sits with his string and his puzzles, solving crimes that baffle police purely for his own intellectual satisfaction. Polly Burton returns after twenty years to find him exactly as she left him: calculating, sardonic, and utterly absorbed in the elegant architecture of murder. These thirteen stories subvert everything we expect from detective fiction. The Old Man never lifts a finger to bring criminals to justice; he simply demonstrates, with theatrical precision, how obviously the guilty should have been caught. What emerges is a meditation on the pleasure of pure reasoning, the gap between intellectual satisfaction and moral action. This final collection in Orczy's trilogy rewards readers who appreciate detection as a game rather than a crusade. The Old Man in the Corner is no hero, yet his detached brilliance makes conventional sleuths seem almost crude by comparison.
