The story follows émigrés, including Madame la Marquise de Mortain and her son Laurent, as they return to a homeland fraught with political intrigue and shifting loyalties. The narrative explores the tensions between Royalists and Bonapartists, reflecting the complexities of identity and aristocratic ideals in a changing society. The novel was later adapted into a play titled The Legion of Honour in 1918.
