Trumpet-Major
Trumpet-Major is Thomas Hardy’s only historical novel, and it remains a charming outlier in his oeuvre. Set in Wessex during the Napoleonic Wars, when England braces for French invasion, it follows Anne Garland, a gentle village woman whose quiet life erupts into chaos when three very different men declare their intentions. John Loveday, the upright trumpet-major, offers honor and steadfastness. His brother Robert, a roguish sailor, brings adventure and danger. And then there’s Festus Derriman, the squire’s cowardly son, whose desperation makes him almost pitiable. What elevates this novel beyond a simple love triangle is Hardy’s sharp eye for how war exposes character, how social masks slip when nation and heart are at stake. Unlike most of Hardy’s work, this one offers genuine hope, and Anne’s choice actually leads to happiness. It’s a surprising, gentle novel from an author who usually delights in breaking his readers’ hearts.
