American Literature, Novels

Before there was Little Women, before there were a hundred iterations of the orphaned heroine finding her way in the world, there was Ellen Montgomery. Sent out into the wide, wide world at just ten years old after her mother dies and her father abandons her to the care of indifferent relatives, Ellen must navigate a landscape of loss, displacement, and uncertain belonging. She moves between households, each with its own demands and expectations, carrying her mother's memory and Christian teachings like a compass through unfamiliar territory. Warner, writing as Elizabeth Wetherell, crafted a story that spoke directly to the anxieties and aspirations of nineteenth-century American readers, particularly young women navigating the treacherous waters between childhood and adulthood. What makes the novel endure is not its sentimentality or its earnest religious faith, though both are essential to its period flavor, but rather its quiet, radical insistence that a young girl can possess an inner life, a capacity for suffering and resistance, worthy of an entire novel. It was the first American bestseller for good reason: it understood something true about what it cost to grow up.

“My dear little daughter,” said he, “you cannot be so glad to come back as my arms and my heart will be to receive you.””
