The Talisman
1948
The Crusaders lie siege to the Holy Land, but their greatest enemy may be themselves. King Richard I of England is ill, his Christian allies squabble for power, and the once-mighty army splinters into factions envious and bitter. Into this fractured world rides Sir Kenneth, a doughty Scottish knight whose only heraldic device is a couchant leopard, and whose honor is about to be tested beyond measure. When Kenneth encounters a Saracen emir in the desert, he discovers that the boundaries between enemy and ally are far more permeable than crusade sermons suggest. The emir is Saladin himself, and their mutual respect becomes a dangerous bridge between two worlds. What follows is a tale of disguised identities, attempted assassination, and a trial by combat that will reveal not only the true villain but Sir Kenneth's secret lineage. Scott builds his narrative around the paradox of enemies who understand each other better than Christian brothers do, using the Third Crusade as a backdrop for exploring how honor can transcend religious and cultural divides.

“Blessed be his name, who hath appointed the quiet night to follow the busy day, and the calm sleep to refresh the wearied limbs and to compose the troubled spirit.””
— Walter Scott
“Possessed of many of those royal qualities for which he was termed by his subjects the August, Philip might be termed the Ulysses, as Richard was indisputably the Achilles, of the Crusade. The King of France was sagacious, wise, deliberate in council, steady and calm in action, seeing clearly, and steadily pursuing, the measures most for the interest of his kingdom”
— Walter Scott
— Walter Scott
