The River's Children: An Idyl of the Mississippi

The Mississippi is in flood. It swallows land, threatens homes, and turns neighbors into refugees. But for the Black laborers who brace the riverbanks with their songs and sweat, the rising waters are just one front in a longer war for dignity. Ruth McEnery Stuart captures the rhythm of river life in this neglected novel: the way danger creates kinship, how floodwaters strip away social pretense to reveal who people really are. Through characters like Felix and Adolphe, she documents the intimate dramas that unfold when a community faces annihilation together. The river becomes both literal threat and metaphorical mirror, reflecting the resilience of those who must constantly rebuild their world. Stuart wrote from deep knowledge of this landscape, and her ear for language renders the songs, speech, and silences of her characters with startling fidelity. This is Southern literature before the South wanted to admit it had a literature.
