Daddy Do-Funny's Wisdom Jingles

Published in 1919, this collection of short verses features Daddy Do-Funny, an elderly Black man presented as a folk philosopher dispensing homespun wisdom on a Southern plantation. Written in heavy dialect by white author Ruth McEnery Stuart, the poems use animal fables and rural vignettes to deliver gentle moral lessons about humility, contentment, and community. A rooster's pride, a cow's ambition, the quiet counsel of an owl each become vehicles for folksy admonitions wrapped in rhyme. The book is very much a product of its era, reflecting the racial dynamics and sentimentality of post-Reconstruction Southern literature. It will appeal primarily to those interested in historical literary curiosities and the evolution of American folk traditions, though modern readers should approach it with awareness of its dated racial politics and dialect portrayals.
