Gobolinks; Or, Shadow Pictures for Young and Old

In 1896, a clever mother in New Orleans invented a game that would charm readers for over a century. Drop ink on paper, fold it once, and unfold: out springs a Gobolink. Ruth McEnery Stuart's collection of poems and shadow pictures captures that pure, creative joy of making something from almost nothing. The verses introduce a menagerie of impossible creatures: chickens that dance, octopuses with jokes to tell, a Butterfly Man tending his whimsical garden. Each poem celebrates the playful nonsense of beings who exist only because a child pressed wet ink between folded pages. What makes Gobolinks enduring is its generous spirit. Stuart doesn't just show readers these strange companions; she teaches them how to make their own. The book becomes an invitation, a craft project disguised as poetry, a reminder that the best magic is the kind you can hold in your hands. The creatures are gentle, odd, and full of personality, embodying exactly the kind of wonder that children treasure and adults forget they once knew. For families who want to make something together, for anyone who remembers the thrill of ink-stained fingers and unexpected shapes, Gobolinks remains a small masterpiece of imaginative play.
