The Peasant and the Prince

Set in the powder-keg months before the French Revolution erupts, Harriet Martineau's 1841 novel follows Charles and Marie, a young peasant couple in the village of Saint Menehould whose dreams of building a life together are crushed beneath the weight of aristocratic excess. Charles works tirelessly to construct a humble hut for his bride, but the crippling salt tax and the endless demands of quartering soldiers render his efforts futile. Meanwhile, the arrival of the Dauphiness from Germany sparks fanfare among the nobility while the local peasants starve in the shadow of their opulence. Martineau, one of the Victorian era's most influential social theorists, weaves a damning portrait of a society where the prince lives entrenched in luxury while the peasantry teeters on the edge of annihilation. The personal becomes powerfully political: Charles and Marie's thwarted romance becomes a lens through which to understand the revolutionary fury building across France. This is historical fiction with a reformer\'s urgency, less interested in court intrigue than in documenting the human cost of inequality.
